advocate

Let me break even

with the odds. There’s no

ecstasy in winding down, but

please believe

it isn’t excruciating either. I’ll bet that inertia

is what we need for a while

to hear the advocacy inside;

a silence to exploit with the sound of our rescue.

It is very true that winding down is not excruciating. Sometimes it is necessary to make a 'correction' when life has spun. You are allowed to spin it back. The current zeitgeist, which I think all we writers are affected by more than we think. It's about correction and humanity and the world - in the past you would have thought revolution was coming you can see it building everywhere. Questioning of the structures around us in every artform. But then, isn't that what we writers are there for - to put the world into words and help others use their own words in reply. To interact with the world and lay it open.

Yes, I completely agree. I also think this is why I presented this message in such a short poem. I like to think a simple statement is grounding and gives the reader clarity and a sense of being grounded. I'm working on a lot of poems about human fallibility at the moment, and how to overcome periods of uncertainty within ourselves.
