twenty-four hours

Look through the midnight window: where
carousel stars, a tipped hourglass and the abundance
of a human heart,
eat together; the moon shrunken
to a flicker above wax.
The twenty-fourth turn is due, whispers the stars
to the hourglass. Wait—protests, to no avail, the heart—
I have love left—
